However, it is crucial for favorable neurosurgical outcome to delineate also fiber-tracks spreading in vicinity of brain lesion. The objects of this study were to combine diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fMRI for 3D visualization of motor functionality and related connectivity in vicinity of discrete brain lesions. The combination of fMRI and DTI based fiber tracking provides valuable functional information that cannot be extracted from each method separately. The use of three-dimensional visualization is crucial for understanding the spatial relation between the tumor, critical neuronal activations and fiber tracks.

Characterization of displaced white matter by brain tumors using combined DTI and fMRI.
In vivo white matter tractography by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has become a popular tool for investigation of white matter architecture in the normal brain. Despite some unresolved issues regarding the accuracy of DTI, recent studies applied DTI for delineating white matter organization in the vicinity of brain lesions and especially brain tumors. Apart from the intrinsic limitations of DT...
متن کاملThe Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...
متن کاملCombining fMRI and DTI: A framework for exploring the limits of fMRI-guided DTI fiber tracking and for verifying DTI-based fiber tractography results
A powerful, non-invasive technique for estimating and visualizing white matter tracts in the human brain in vivo is white matter fiber tractography that uses magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging. The success of this method depends strongly on the capability of the applied tracking algorithm and the quality of the underlying data set. However, DTI-based fiber tractography still lacks stan...
متن کاملMethods to Improve Fiber Reconstruction at DTI-Based Tractography in the Area of Brain Tumor: Case Illustration and Literature Review
Background and Aim: DTI-based tractography could help us to visualize the spatial relation of fiber tracts to brain lesions. Several factors may interfere with the procedure of diffusion-based tractography, especially in brain tumors. The aim of the current study is to discuss several solutions to improve the procedure of fiber reconstruction adjacent or inside brain lesions. Illustrative cases...
متن کاملEuclidean distance as a measure of ventral and dorsal white matter connectivity
Fiber tractography based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has become an important in-vivo tool for investigating the anatomical connectivity between brain regions. Combining DTI with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for the mapping of the structural and functional architecture of large-scale networks for cognitive processing. This line of research has shown that ventral and ...
